Overview
General information
The School of Management was established in July 2000. Its predecessor, the Department of Management Engineering, was founded in 1979 as one of the earliest academic units at the inception of Tianjin University of Technology. It also stands as one of the pioneering institutions in China to offer undergraduate programs in Management. In 2019, the university's former International College of Business & Technology was fully integrated into the School of Management, significantly enhancing its scale and distinctive strengths.
The School offers 11 undergraduate majors: Cost Engineering Management, Business Administration, Project Management, Industrial Engineering, Big Data Management and Application, Insurance (admission suspended in 2024, replaced by Financial Technology), Financial Management (to be replaced by Accounting in 2025), Logistics Management (admission suspended in 2024), Marketing (admission suspended in 2024), Business Administration (joint degree program), and Industrial Engineering (joint degree program). Among them, Cost Engineering Management, Business Administration, Project Management, and Marketing are recognized as National First-Class Undergraduate Programs. Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management are designated as Tianjin Municipal First-Class Undergraduate Programs. Additionally, the Cost Engineering program is accredited by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.
The School was approved in 2023 to host a Postdoctoral Research Station in Management Science and Engineering, a significant milestone in its research capabilities. In 2023, the School earned accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). This accomplishment makes it the 48th AACSB-accredited institution in Mainland China and the first at a municipal university in Tianjin, placing it among the top 6% of business schools worldwide.
Disciplines & Programs
The School houses a doctoral program in Management Science and Engineering, a cross-disciplinary doctoral program in Low-Altitude Technology and Engineering, and a postdoctoral research station in Management Science and Engineering. At the academic master's level, it offers graduate programs in Management Science and Engineering and Business Administration. Management Science and Engineering is designated as a key discipline in Tianjin. The School provides professional Master's degrees in Engineering Management (MEM), Accounting (MPAcc), and Business Administration (MBA). It also runs a joint Master's in Project Management (MPM) program in collaboration with international partners, which has cultivated over 3,000 senior project management professionals for society.
In recent years, our MBA program has garnered significant recognition, receiving honors such as the "2023 Outstanding MBA Institution for Comprehensive Strength in Business Education", the "2024 Excellent Operation Award for Chinese Business Schools", the "2024 Characteristic MBA Program Award for Chinese Business Schools", and the "2024 MBA Institution with Social Influence".
Since the establishment of our Case Center, the School has placed a strong emphasis on case development. This commitment is reflected in the integration of the case-based teaching method into over 20 courses, benefiting more than 2,600 students. To date, four of our teaching cases have been accepted into the China Management Case-Sharing Center, with one distinguished as a "National Top 100 Excellent Management Case" in the 16th competition.
Teaching &Research
The School has achieved significant excellence in both teaching and research. It has earned some of the highest honors in Chinese higher education, including the designation as a National-Level Excellent Teaching Team, a National-Level Elite Course, and a National-Level Distinctive Program. The School is also home to three National-Level First-Class Undergraduate Courses and three Municipal-Level First-Class Undergraduate Courses.
In research, the School has undertaken more than 80 national-level projects, including those under the National High-Tech R&D Program (863 Program), the National Sci-Tech Support Program, and grants from the National Natural Science Foundation and the National Social Science Foundation. Additionally, it has conducted over 120 provincial/ministerial-level research projects and has been honored with 25 awards at these levels. The School has also completed more than 230 industry-commissioned projects and has published over 350 high-quality research papers.
Furthermore, the School operates two Tianjin Municipal Key Research Bases in Humanities and Social Sciences and three provincial/ministerial-level think tanks, providing robust intellectual support for strategic studies, policy advice, and talent development.
Faculty
The School boasts a distinguished body of 172 faculty members and staff, including 141 full-time teachers. Among them are 35 professors and 29 associate professors, with 110 holding doctoral degrees. The faculty includes 18 doctoral supervisors and 67 master's supervisors.
Our team features numerous recognized scholars: one National-Level Teaching Master, two Tianjin Municipal Teaching Masters, four experts recruited through the Tianjin Overseas High-Level Talent Program, one Tianjin Young Top-Notch Talent, and four Tianjin Distinguished Adjunct Professors. Additionally, the School is proud to have a substantial number of mid-career and young backbone teachers honored through prestigious talent programs such as the Tianjin "Five Batches" Talent, Disciplinary Leading Talent, and "131" Innovative Talent initiatives.
Education
The School currently has a student population of over 4,200, comprising over 3,300 undergraduates, over 800 master's students, over 40 doctoral candidates, and about 30 international students. Through over 40 years of educational practice, the School has cultivated a large number of outstanding graduates who have made significant contributions to society.
Guided by the educational philosophy of "promoting learning through competition", the School keeps pace with the trends of the times to cultivate high-quality, interdisciplinary talent. Our academic environment strongly encourages participation in disciplinary contests, and our innovation and entrepreneurship education has yielded remarkable outcomes. Both graduate and undergraduate students have consistently achieved outstanding results in various national and municipal competitions. Notable recent achievements include the National Grand Prize in the 17th "Challenge Cup" Special Competition, the National Second Prize in the National College Student Robot Contest, the National Second Prize in the "Challenge Cup" National Undergraduate Academic and Technological Works Competition, the National Second Prize in the 12th National College Student Advertising Art Competition, and the Gold Award in the Tianjin Regional Competition of the China International "Internet+" College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition.
